More than half of grain storage elevators in Russia need replacement or modernization. According to the Russian Grain Union, in the situation of deficit of elevator capacities and their catastrophic obsolescence, farmers annually lose at least 10% of their yelds.
Reported by "Grain on-line".
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that at present most of the best granaries in Siberia and the Volga region are stuffed with intervention grain from the previous yelds, and farmers are afraid that there may not be enough capacity to store new yelds.
“Russian granaries can accept more than 120 million tons of grain, while elevators account for only one third of the volume - 43 million tons, more than half of which does not meet regulatory requirements,” Arkady Zlochevsky, chairman of the Russian Grain Union, explained to "TASS".
Ministry of Agriculture of Tatarstan noted that more than 75% of the operating elevators in the region were constructed in the 1950-1960s, and require modernization. According to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Omsk Region, the region is in dire need of at least three linear elevators with capacity of 100 thousand tons each. In the Krasnodar Territory, where the highest yields are traditionally collected, it is planned to upgrade the fixed assets of the granary and start construction of new ones in the current year.
“For these purposes, about 4 billion rubles have been allocated from the regional budget,” said Andrey Korobka, vice-governor of the region.
However, the Kuban is rather an exception. In most of the regions, the authorities are in no hurry to invest in this industry, because construction of elevators is expensive, and payback takes a very long time. So far, only large agricultural businesses are investing in the construction of elevators; small and medium-sized producers cannot afford such financing now.
