BEIJING, December. 4th (Xinhua) -- China is expected to surpass USA and become the world's largest importer within 5 years. This was announced today by a leading Chinese investment company.
Over the past 10 years, China in terms of average annual import growth has exceeded USA by 6 percentage points. If, according to the basic scenario, this growth gap remains in 2018 and shrinks by 0.15 percentage points per annum over the coming years, China will become the world's largest importer by 2022, as specified in the report published by China International Capital Corporation /CICC/.
According more conservative estimates China will become the world's largest importer by 2025, as CICC noted.
Currently, China is the world's largest exporter and the second largest importer. According to official data, following the stabilization of the domestic economy and recovery of global prices for raw materials, the volume of imports in the first 10 months of this year increased by 21.5 percent compared to the same period of last year.
