The Chinese authorities confirmed that the country intends to achieve full self-sufficiency in pork production. The PRC will have to significantly increase grain imports from Russia, Ukraine and other countries in order to feed the world's largest number of pigs. As was reported by Bloomberg.
China currently consumes half of the world's pork volume. At the same time, the authorities of the Middle Kingdom have set a goal to produce 95% of protein domestically, and this result should be achieved by 2025.
China wants to become completely independent from imports of poultry and eggs, 85% self-sufficient in beef and lamb, and 70% in dairy products, as the country's agriculture ministry stated.
To achieve this, China will have to buy more soybeans and feed grains needed to fatten pigs, cattle and poultry. China is already the largest importer of soybeans and corn and has purchased an unprecedented amounts of them over the past two years in order to feed a herd of pigs recovering from African pig fever.
China's activity even provoked an increase in world prices. Experts believe that China will purchase greater grain volumes from Russia and Ukraine: it is an interesting fact that China is the general importer of Ukrainian grain.
